Is it time for a change in career

With 2019 already upon us many people are starting off the year considering their goals and ambitions for the next 12 months. It may be that you are out of work and are determined to start your journey on the career path or that you are already in employment but fancy a bit of a change.
Whatever the reason for a change in career, you need to work out how you are going to get there. It may be that you need to undertake some extra education to gain additional qualifications or possibly that you need to get some work experience under your belt before you can start applying for jobs.
If you need to return to college or university, you will need to think about how you are going to fund the course and also your current commitments. Many people find it hard going back in to full time education when they already have commitments like children, mortgage or rent and other bills, but this is not to say it is impossible.
Some people are eligible for student loads that do not have to be paid back until they are earning a certain amount. This may be enough to see you through whilst you are in education.

Will your job affect your chances of getting a mortgage?

If you are looking to buy a home then you may be surprised that your job can have quite a big impact on your chances of being accepted. If you are self-employed for example then you will most probably need 3- 5 years’ worth of accounts showing that you have a good turn over before you will even be considered. If you have not keep accurate accounts then this may prove tricky and you could find yourself in a situation where no one will even be willing to offer you the money.

If you are in a low or zero hour contract then again you may struggle to get the mortgage deal you are looking for. With no guarantee of work, mortgage providers tend to not like to take the risk.

If you really want to get a mortgage then you may have to consider finding alternative employment, ideally a full-time permanent position. You will often need to supply at least 3 months of payslips and possibly a contract of employment. If you are buying a house with someone else then often joint income is taken into account so it may be if they have a well-paid stable job, you will be able to get the mortgage deal you need to buy your home.

How to find a job quickly

Sometimes there comes a point where we just need to find a job quickly. It may be that you have been made redundant or that your circumstances have changed and need to find more work or possibly that you have moved to a new area meaning you have had to leave you old job.

Recent research has shown that on average it can take 23 days for the entire hiring process, which means you need to work fast if you cannot last another month with little or no income.

When applying for jobs you need to be specific and realistic. There is little point in filling out loads of application forms for jobs that you are not really that interested in or would not fit in with your other commitments. Instead have a think about what it is you really want to do and spend time researching positions that would match what it is you want.

Be sure not to stop applying for jobs just because you have already applied for a few you really want. You need to keep applying for jobs that match what you are looking for until you have been offered a position.

Take a lot of time over your cover letter and CV. Many employers will spend less than one minute looking at a CV and therefor you need to be able to grab their attention in a covering letter.

Don’t let job hunting get you down

Looking for a job can be stressful and often can make you feel a little depressed. If you have been in the process of looking for a job for quite a while with little success, you can start to feel deflated which can make you less productive.

It may be that you are in desperate need of work to pay bills, if this is the case then you may consider doing some agency work whilst still looking for a job so you have an income coming in. There is nothing to stop you applying for jobs when working for an agency and with temp work you can easily turn down a day if you need to attend an interview. If you are already in a job or can afford to be out of work for a while then you do not need to worry as much about time scales. So that you don’t cause yourself unnecessary stress and worry, it is a good idea to have a few good days when you apply for jobs then take a few days off. Doing this will give you some down time from the sometimes tedious game of job hunting.

Finding jobs in your local area

If you are looking for work and need a job that is local to you then you need to know the places in which to start searching for employment. Local jobs are often advertised in local newspapers and this is especially true if the business is in a rural area or only a small business. National companies will often advertise jobs on their website and through larger agencies. Agencies can help you find a job quickly as they have large databases of companies that are looking for employees. These may be permanent positions of temporary depending on which agency you use and what you are looking for.

Social media is also becoming a popular way to find employment. Many businesses will create ads on sites such as Facebook and Twitter to attract potential applicants. This is a free way for them to advertise their jobs and they can also find out a little bit about the applicant via their profile (if the settings allow) if they use social media to enquire about the position.

You could even pop in to local businesses to see what they may have available. Be sure to take in a CV that you can leave with them.

Finding work in a small town

Living in a small town or village can have plenty of benefits but along with this can come frustrations when trying to find work. Often smaller areas have a lower cost of living, tight knit communities and you may be surrounded by beautiful countryside but when it comes to job vacancies you may find that there are very limited options available to you.

If you are looking to set up your own business then it is worth engaging with the local community to find out if there would be an interest in what you are looking to sell. Carry out some market research to find out what people are looking for and what prices they would be willing to pay. Social media can be a great way of doing this if you do not want to approach people face to face or simply do not have the time. Start a post in your local community page or even a poll asking for people’s opinions.

IF you are looking for employed work then you may want to drop your CV in to as many local businesses as possible. Also keep your ear to the ground for any local companies that may be expanding soon as they are likely to be looking for new members of staff.

Finding work in a city

If you are on the search for a new job and live in a fairly rural area, you may find that there simply are not enough job opportunities available to you, especially if the job you are looking for is quite niche.

Often the majority of jobs are located in either large towns or cities and this can be a bit of a challenge for those that live in the country. With public transport not always being a quick and as often as we would like, you may find that if you do not drive you will struggle to get to and from work on a daily basis.

When looking for jobs, there may come a time when you need to expand your search area but before applying for a position be sure that you would be able to organise transport should the job be offered to you. Often if you live a distance away from the business that is offering the vacancy, you may be asked at interview how you intend on getting to and from work. If you do not have an answer to this then it could put potential employer off offering you the post.

Work out how much it is going to cost you in transport to work away from your home area and be sure that it is worth while doing before applying for any vacancies.

What is the job of an IT consultant or consultancy company?

Many businesses rely upon all sorts of technology to keep their business running and to grow their business over time. Technology is advancing day by day and often the things that we thought were impossible seem to be verging closer to reality.

The job of an I.T. consulting company or I.T. consultant is to advise their clients on how they can utilise technology to achieve their business goals and make their business more successful.

When an I.T. consulting company is asked to work for a client they will usually go in and spend time looking at their current systems in place and how they are used. From this they can then create a report that will show what needs to be done to improve the use of IT to help improve their business. The idea is often to help the client save time and money by using systems to automate many of the processes that are done individually and also to make record keeping easier. They may for example suggest having a system installed that links all the customer records to the invoicing system and to an email marketing system to allow them to instantly see the complete record of one customer without having to log in to multiple systems.

Getting to know your work colleagues

It is a fact that many of us spend more time with our work colleagues than we do at home with our families. With a full time job you may be out of the house over 8 hours a day and much of this time is spent working with other people at your place of work.

Getting along with fellow members of staff is important for a number of reasons. For your own mental health and social development, you need to be able to interact with people you work with. You may not necessarily feel like you want to be close friends and may not chose to spend time with them outside of work, but it is important than when in work you take some times to get to know them and allow them to get to know you. People who do not get on with their work colleagues often struggle with job satisfaction and find that it can affect all areas of their work. They often become less productive and less willing to go the extra mile for the business such as working late.

If you are struggling to get along with your co-workers than think about how you can improve your working situation of if you feel you cannot, if it may be possible to change your working hours or even the department you work in to allow you to work with other people.

How to master a job interview

If you are in the process of applying for jobs then you may have been called up for an interview. You may have not been to one before or maybe you have been to a few but still get nervous about attending, worrying in case you say something wrong or forget to mention something that is important. If you are attending an interview for a post that you really want then you may make yourself even more nervous as you may feel this is the perfect opportunity and you do not want to do anything to ruin it.

When preparing for an interview practice can make perfect. Obviously you will not know the exact questions that you are going to be asked in the interview but there are a number of common questions that you can pre plan for. Questions such as “why do you want the job” and “why do you think you would be good in this role” are often asked by potential employers.

Make sure that you go through your CV and highlight any areas that you think they may question you on. This may be a gap in employment or a certain qualification you have achieved. Be sure to think ahead as to how you will explain any time out of work or short periods of employment.
