Working as a hairdresser

Hairdressing can be a great career to get in to if you enjoy being a little creative and talking to people. Ideally you should be confident and able to speak to people and understand their individual requirements.

When you go to a hairdressers it can often cost in the region of a hundred pounds for a colour, cut and blow dry and so you want to feel a little pampered and treated. As a hairdresser you need to be able to make the experience as nice as possible for the client so that they will want to return to you again.

Jobs in hairdressing can be gained in a number of ways, some people learn on the job whilst others go to college or university to obtain qualifications that may allow them to walk straight in to a senior job role. Pay is not always great for hairdressing jobs, especially when you are first starting out, but if you get to run your own salon of land a management position then the pay can be quite rewarding.

Finding a job when you leave the army

If you have been in the army for a number of years and chose to leave, you may find it hard to discover what job you want to do. It may be that you have been in a very active role and need to find something that will keep you busy and allow you to be challenged.

Depending on what you want to do, I would recommend doing some voluntary work in a few different industries to try and establish what you will get fulfilment out of. This way you can try many different job roles within a a 6 month period without having to enter in to lengthy contracts.

It may be the case that you have no formal qualifications so there may be a need to return to college or university t gain the qualifications needed to progress in to the career in which you want to be.

There are many agencies out there that will be able to discuss your options with you and advise you on what path you need to take in order to be able to apply for the jobs that you wish to.

Bored with your current career? Maybe it’s time for a change

Many people stay stuck in a job that they are unhappy with due to the fear of the unknown, some think that they are ‘too old’ to change career paths or wouldn’t get through an interview after so many years of not having one but this simply isn’t the case.

The fact is if you are young enough to work then you are young enough to change your job if you’re unhappy and sometimes if your financial state allows it you can take a better job on a lower starting wage then work your way back up through the ranks to get a better wage eventually.

I would never advise that anyone however quit their current job before finding a new one as this just adds unnecessary pressure to the job hunt process and doesn’t look good to a new potential employer either.

Life is too short to stay in a job that you hate though, so have courage and take a chance on something new.

Working in a call centre – is it for you?

Across the UK many companies have call centres that handle their outbound sales calls, incoming technical product queries and handle all aspects of customer service. These jobs are plentiful and can be great especially in terms of commission that you can make from the sales side of the calls. However working in a call centre can also be very challenging, particularly when faced with difficult customers who have called to complain or people being rude and unresponsive to sales calls.

If you want to work in telesales then you will need to have a thick skin and any good sales person will tell you it’s a numbers game, for every thirty no sales you will get one successful sale, and that is where your focus should be in order to maximise your commission.

Having confidence and a good telephone manner is essential for work in a call centre and it will greatly help if you can remain relaxed and conversation whilst following a call script.

Hard work but can be a great challenge and if your good at it can earn you a lot of commission.

Job Fairs – A good place to find work?

Job fairs in the UK are a place where employers go to advertise their company and any recruitment opportunities that they may be able to offer to a suitable candidate.
The companies that have stands at these events are often large companies that are able to offer a number of job opportunities at different branches of their business across the UK, some examples of these are Royal Mail, Virgin, Bentley and Sky.
Anyone can attend a job fair and they are usually free. The fairs are often advertised on the internet with details of which companies will be there and what the set up for the day will be.
Attending a job fair is a great opportunity to get to speak to a representative of a company that you are interested in and get to ask questions and learn a bit about the roles that they are offering before applying for a job.
It’s also a great place to get general tips and advice on job hunting and completing application forms as well as guidance on creating a great CV.

Health and Safety

It’s easy to moan about today’s risk conscious world. Safety regulations often feel like an inconvenience and what ever happened to good old common sense? Health and safety legislation is there to safeguard workers from accident and injury but also to protect businesses from costly legal claims. In our compensation culture things are only going to get more stringent.

As a worker you are entitled to work in a safe environment with properly controlled risks. You may occasionally have to sign documents detailing how to proceed safely in your duties and these should be read carefully. If you have an accident but weren’t following the correct procedure, you may not be able to make a successful claim.

An employer is responsible for putting risk assessments in place and providing adequate protection and PPE for workers. As an employee, you are required to work in a safe manner within company guidelines and report damaged equipment and any accidents or near misses. You are not required to do something you feel is unsafe just because an employer tells you to.

Getting along with colleagues at work

Job satisfaction is massively important if you want to do well in a certain role. It not only makes you feel positive and look forward to working but also makes you more effective and productive.

Part of job satisfaction is achieved by getting along with the people you work with whether it be a co-worker or manager / owner within the business.

If you are in a position of authority then you will need to ensure that you always maintain a healthy balance of friendship and leadership. If you are a manager for example, you do not have to distance your self from the other employees but should ensure that you can take a step up should you need to discipline or talk to somebody you are in charge of. If you become too close as friends this can become very difficult to do but if you chose not to get to know anyone you may find that people do not respect you.

Completing an Application Form

When applying for a new job completing the application form can seem tedious especially as a lot of the information it is asking for will already be on your CV. However it is a necessary task and the way that you complete the application form can say a lot about you to a potential new employer so it really is worth giving it some thought.

The first thing to do is to read through the whole of the application form to see what is required, after that make notes on a separate sheet with regards to specific requests they have made such as ‘write in black ink’ or ‘must be hand written’. These things may seem a bit pedantic but they are sometimes put on forms to check how well you have read the form and if you are able to follow basic instruction.

If you know that your handwriting is not very neat and there is nothing to say the application needs to be hand written then you may want to scan the document and type up the application to give the neatest presentation of your form. Read each section carefully and try to answer fully but without waffling, and before returning the form ALWAYS proof read the document to ensure that you have not made any mistakes.

Does having a variety of jobs look bad on a CV?

People often worry when it comes to writing their CV that they have not had many different jobs, therefore do not have much to say. A CV isn’t really about the amount of jobs you have had, more about the relevant qualifications and experience you have. If you have only had one or two jobs, do not try to write paragraph upon paragraph to try and fill up the page, simply state what you have done and what skills / training you have had.

Often a person that has had only one or two jobs over the course of a long period can be more attractive to employers than someone who has had seven or eight different posts in a short space of time. This is because employers want to look for someone who is looking to develop their career with them and not leave at the drop of a hat. If you have had a few jobs that have only lasted six months or so, you will need to expect the interviewer to question this. It may be that you have a very valid reason, but if you do not have the answers they may think that you have no sticking power and therefor are not for them.
